The first time I saw the Wizard of Oz in the movie theater I upset. At home I had a black and white TV and the beginning of the movie was in black and white. I wanted to see it in color. As the movie continued, as we all know, the color began in Oz. What a colorful wonderful place that all of a sudden turned scary when the Wicked Witch of the East showed up. Ever time I watch the movie I'm scared when I see the witch and especially the flying monkeys. My daughter thinks I'm silly. Kids are so jaded, so they don't get it.
In 1976, during the US Bicentenial, my class went to see the Independence Train that had a moving museum that crossed the country. On the train were items from the Smithsonian Institute with items from movies, history and different American Eras. The highlight for me was to see the Ruby Slippers. I was 14, at the time, but they still meant magic to me.
I've been enjoying checking out different Oz stuff during this magical Anniversary Year.
